Data-Driven Site Selection for Telecom Infrastructure Build

Telecom

Technology, Analytics & Omnichannel Enablement

How a Fortune 50 telecom enterprise used advanced data analysis and scenario modeling to prioritize optimal geographic locations for a large-scale infrastructure build.

The Challenge

A Fortune 50 telecommunications enterprise partnered with The Northridge Group to analyze and prioritize geographic locations for a major infrastructure build investment.

Location prioritization required comprehensive data collection and mining to answer critical questions, including:

  • What is the scope of current client spending across services and infrastructure?

  • Where is current spend geographically concentrated?

  • Which geographic groupings warrant the greatest focus?

  • What is the incremental revenue opportunity?

  • What is the estimated cost to build?

Leadership needed a structured, data-backed approach to evaluate investment scenarios and prioritize markets with the strongest financial return potential.

The Strategy

NRG designed a rigorous analytics framework to evaluate infrastructure investment scenarios using integrated data sources and financial modeling.

The strategy focused on:

  • Gathering, normalizing, and integrating data across location, spend, infrastructure costs, and network interconnections

  • Developing grouping methodologies to assess geographic proximity and infrastructure density

  • Designing scenario models across six distinct use cases based on minimum location thresholds and maximum geographic distances

  • Evaluating critical financial attributes including CAPEX, NPV, IRR, projected savings, and circuit implications

The objective was to create a clear, quantitative foundation for capital allocation decisions.

The Execution

NRG executed a structured analytics and modeling engagement that included:

  • Multi-source data integration and validation

  • Market grouping analysis and infrastructure proximity modeling

  • Scenario-based financial modeling across six use cases

  • Development of use-case summaries by fiber ring including key financial and operational metrics

Outputs were structured to enable drill-down visibility into locations, circuits, customers, and projected financial outcomes.

The Impact

The engagement delivered a prioritized portfolio of infrastructure build opportunities grounded in detailed financial analysis.

Outcomes included:

  • A ranked set of fiber build use cases supported by drill-through data visibility

  • A visual market plot map with drill-down capability to assess geographic opportunity

  • Clear capital investment guidance demonstrating IRRs at approximately 2x the hurdle rate within five years

With this data-driven foundation, leadership gained clarity on where to deploy multi-million dollar CAPEX investments to maximize long-term enterprise value.
